Gesture and Cross-hatching

Gesture: A line that does not stay at the edges but moves freely within forms. These lines record movement of the eye as well as implying the motion in the form. It is usually used as a rough sketch.

Cross-hatching: A drawing technique in which a series of lines are layered over each other to build up value and to suggest form and volume. This is another form of sketching commonly used by artists.

(Neither of the art in this post was done by me)
